How to Obtain Teen Driver's License in Texas:

Texas has special rules for keeping teen drivers safe on the road.  This involves teen driver ed and practice before getting an unrestricted license. Obtaining a teen driver’s license in Texas involves a few steps as part of the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program.

Here’s are some key points:

Texas Learner License (Phase I)

Allow driving practice with a licensed adult.

  • Age Requirement: 15 years old.
  • Driver Education: Take a state-approved driver education course. This comprises 6 hours of classroom instruction or Teen 32 hours for block courses.
  • Documentation: Teen must give proof of enrollment, either a high school diploma, or a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form.
  • Restrictions: Teen must have a licensed adult (21+) in the front passenger seat when driving, Teen’s should not use any cell phone, and teens should hold the learner’s permit for at least 6 months. If Teen license is suspended at any time while holding a learner license, the initial six-month period increases by the number of days of the suspension. This is to make sure Teen hold a valid learner license for a full six months.

Texas Provisional License (Phase II)

Allows independent driving with some restrictions.

  • Age Requirement: 16-17 years old.
  • Requirements: Teen must hold a learner license for at least 6 months, complete behind-the-wheel training (7 hours of observation, 7 hours of driving, and 30 hours of practice with 10 hours at night), and passed the Impact Texas Teen Driver Program.
  • Restrictions: No more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member, driving curfew is implemented from midnight to 5:00 a.m., and Teen should not use any cell phone while driving.

Full Unrestricted License

  • Age Requirement: 18 years old.
  • Requirements: Teen must successfully complete the provisional phase without any suspensions or violations

Teen 32-Hour Driver Ed Course

The 32-hour Teen driver ed course is to prepare teenagers who wish to drive for the various situations they might face in the real world.

7 Hours, Teen Behind-the-Wheel Course
