What is included in Teen Behind-the-Wheel course?

In Texas, if you're a teen aged 15 to 17 with a learner’s permit, you'll need to complete the Teen Behind-the-Wheel course as part of your driver education. This course covers the state-required 14 hours of in-car training, which breaks down into:

  • 7 hours of actual driving lessons with a certified instructor or a parent if you're going the Parent-Taught program
  • 7 hours of in-car observation, where you get to watch another driver and pick up on their techniques and safety habits

Once you've wrapped up these hours and held your learner’s permit for at least six months, you can take the official DPS road test once you're at least 16 years old and have checked off all the other requirements, like completing the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course.
