  1. Complete First 6 Hours of Classroom & Get Your Learner License

Teens aged 15+ complete the first 6 hours of our TDLR-approved 24-hour classroom course. Once complete, your teen is eligible to visit the Texas DPS office to obtain their Learner License (Permit), the first official step toward full licensure.

    📚 6 Hours Classroom
  2. Complete the Remaining 18 Hours of Classroom Instruction

Under the new 2025 Texas law, total classroom instruction has been reduced from 32 hours to just 24 hours, saving your teen weeks of learning time. Our engaging curriculum covers Texas traffic laws, defensive driving, and hazard awareness. See official DPS guidelines →

  3. Complete 14 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Training

    🚗 14 Hours In-Car Training
  4. Complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Program

Take the final DPS Road Test right here at Arlington Driving Academy, an authorized DPS third-party testing center. Skip the long DPS office lines. Our on-site examiners conduct the road test using the same vehicle your teen trained in, maximizing their chances of passing first time.

Why Arlington Families Choose Us Over Everyone Else for Teen Classes

We get it. There are a lot of driving schools out there. Here is what makes us genuinely different:

  • 100% In-Person Learning (No Zoom, No Shortcuts): Learning to drive on a laptop call is not real learning. Our instructors are in the room with your teen every single class, making sure they stay engaged, ask questions, and actually understand the material before they ever touch a steering wheel.
  • Real Cars, Real Arlington Roads (No Simulators): From day one of in-car training, your teen will be driving an actual car on actual Arlington streets. Our dual-controlled, safety-inspected vehicles give every student real-world experience and our instructors the peace of mind to keep them safe the entire time.
  • Take Your Permit Test Right Here (Skip the DPS Line): After the first 6 hours of class, your teen takes the official Texas written permit test directly at our academy. No scheduling a separate DPS appointment, no waiting in line for hours. We handle it all in-house.
  • DPS Road Test On-Site (Pass and Drive the Same Day): We are an authorized DPS Third-Party Testing Center. Your teen takes their final road test on the same streets they have been practicing on, using the same car they trained in. That familiarity makes a massive difference on test day.

What Your Teen Will Actually Learn

Teen 24-Hour Driver Ed Course

We cover everything the State of Texas requires, but we teach it in a way that actually sticks. Here is what is on the curriculum:

  • Texas Traffic Laws & Road Signs: Everything from speed limits and right-of-way to pavement markings and school zone rules.
  • Defensive Driving: How to stay alert, manage space on the road, and handle bad drivers around you without panicking.
  • Vehicle Basics: Steering, braking, mirrors, dashboard warnings, and what to do when something goes wrong.
  • Driver Responsibility: Why seatbelts save lives, what DUI really means, and how Texas auto insurance works.
  • Emergencies & Texas Weather: How to handle a blowout, an accident, or driving through a sudden Texas thunderstorm safely.
  • Human Trafficking Awareness: Texas law requires this topic. Teens learn how to recognize warning signs on the road and how to safely report suspicious activity.

In the Car: 14 Hours of Real-World Driving

The classroom gives your teen the knowledge. The in-car sessions give them the confidence. Over 7 hours of direct behind-the-wheel practice and 7 hours of riding along with another student driver, your teen will cover:

  • All Road Types: Neighborhood streets, busy intersections, Arlington city roads, and highway merging.
  • Hazard Recognition: Spotting dangers before they become accidents.
  • DPS Test Maneuvers: Parallel parking, three-point turns, reversing, and yielding practiced until they are second nature.
  • Real Confidence: By the final session, most of our students feel completely ready. That is exactly the goal.

The Texas Driver's License Process, Step by Step

Texas uses a Graduated Driver License (GDL) program to ensure every teen earns their license the safe way. Here is how the whole journey works:

Age 15+

Phase I: Learner License (Permit)

Think of this as your official learning pass. To get it:

  • Complete the first 6 hours of our classroom course.
  • Take and pass the written permit test (we administer this at our academy).
  • Bring your Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form to the DPS.
⚠️ Permit Restrictions A licensed adult age 21+ must sit in the front seat at all times. No cell phones. You must hold this permit for at least 6 months before upgrading.
Age 16 to 17

Phase II: Provisional License

This is the big one. This license lets you drive on your own. To qualify:

  • Hold your permit for at least 6 full months.
  • Complete the full 24-hour classroom course and 14 hours of in-car training.
  • Log 30 hours of extra practice driving with a parent (10 of those hours must be at night).
  • Complete the free Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) online program.
  • Pass the final DPS Road Test.
⚠️ Provisional Restrictions No driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m. (unless for school or work). Only one non-family passenger under 21 allowed. No cell phones, not even hands-free.
Age 18

Phase III: Full Unrestricted License

Once you turn 18 and have completed Phase II cleanly (no major violations or suspensions), all restrictions are automatically lifted. You are fully licensed and ready for the open road.

Why Choose a Professional Instructor Over Parent-Taught?

Honestly? Teaching your teen to drive is one of the most stressful things a parent can do. The arguments, the sudden braking, the white-knuckle turns.

When you enroll with Arlington Driving Academy, you hand that job to us. Our certified instructors have the patience, the training, and the dual-brake car to handle first-time drivers every single day. Your teen learns faster, builds real confidence, and you get to stay the good guy. No yelling, no tension. Just a teen who knows how to drive the right way.

Ready to Get Started? Spots Fill Up Fast.

Especially during summer break and the holiday season, our classes book up weeks in advance. If your teen is turning 15 soon or has been waiting to get their permit, now is the time to lock in their spot.

I tried the Parent-Taught course with my oldest son two years ago, and honestly, the in-car arguments were a nightmare. For my daughter, we chose Arlington Driving Academy and it was worth every single penny. The professional instructors handled all the stressful driving lessons, and she even took her written permit test right in their classroom instead of waiting at the DPS. Thank you for saving my sanity!

Sarah M. Arlington, TX

I was really nervous about driving in heavy traffic and merging onto the highway, but my instructor was incredibly patient and never yelled. The 14 hours of road time really built my confidence. Because I was able to take my final DPS road test right at the academy on the exact same streets I practiced on, I passed on my very first try!

Jason T. (Age 16) Grand Prairie, TX

The updated 24-hour classroom schedule was perfect for our son's busy high school sports schedule. But the absolute best part of this whole package was the convenience. We didn't have to wait months for a DPS road test appointment, he took his final driving test right there at the academy. The whole process was fast, professional, and completely stress-free.

Marcus & Elena V. Mansfield, TX

As a parent, you just want to know your kid is learning the right way. I love that they don't use shortcuts or video game simulators. My son learned in an actual car on real Arlington streets with a certified expert. Plus, the completion certificate we got at the end instantly lowered his auto insurance rate. A fantastic, high-quality program.

FAQs for Texas Teen Driving Course

You can start the classroom phase as early as 14 years old. But you cannot apply for your Learner License (Permit) at the DPS until you are 15 and have finished the first 6 hours of class. So, the earlier you start, the faster you get your permit.

The classroom takes 24 hours total under the new 2025 Texas rules. After getting your permit, you will complete 14 hours of in-car training with us. On top of that, Texas requires 30 hours of practice with a parent before your road test (including 10 hours at night).

Our all-inclusive Teen Driving Course is $540. That covers everything: the 24-hour classroom, the in-house written permit test, and the full 14 hours of behind-the-wheel training. No surprise fees.

Nope! You do not need your permit to begin. You take our 6 hours of classroom first, then take the written permit test right here at our academy. No separate DPS trip needed just to get started.

No stress. If your teen does not pass the written permit test on the first try, they can retake it with us at no extra charge. If they need another shot at the final road test, they can re-schedule after a bit more practice. We want them to succeed and we will support them until they do.

No. This is a fully instructor-led, in-person program at our Arlington campus. Unlike Parent-Taught Drivers Ed (PTDE) where parents handle all the instruction themselves, our state-certified professionals do everything. You get expert teaching without the family stress.
